Open HIV Testing

  • CANAPI 759 West Market Street 1st Floor Akron, OH, 44303 United States (map)

Free and confidential HIV testing every Thursday evening from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

No appointment necessary!

Please do not eat or drink anything 15 minutes prior to your test.

Generally, CANAPI uses Generation 3 oral swab HIV Tests (Oraquick). The test will take 20 minutes to produce a result. If the test shows a positive result, we will collect a second oral sample that will be sent to a lab and used in a Western Blot test. This confirmatory test is definitive, and it generally takes one week.

A Generation 3 HIV test is testing for HIV antibodies. It can take up to three months for your body to produce HIV antibodies if you are infected. We refer to this as the "window period." If your potential infection occurred within the last three months, consider waiting until after the window period to test.

If your potential infection occurred within the last 48 hours, please contact your local Infectious Disease department or Emergency Room to receive Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP), a 28-day course of HIV medication proven effective in preventing a widespread HIV infection from developing in your body.

CANAPI's HIV testing is made possible through a grant from Summit County Public Health, which requires that HIV tests paid for through the grant are only used on individuals with significant risk factors for HIV infection. If your testing counselor does not identify significant risk factors for HIV infection, they may elect not to test you for HIV, but instead provide you with information related to HIV.
